Elements to map:

Buildings

Trace buildings accurately. Zoom in for more accurate tracing.

Be sure buildings are squared. Use the S key (in iD) or the Q key (in JOSM).

building = yes

Residential Areas

Outline Residential Areas after all the buildings are traced. Residential Areas are two or more buildings. Areas composed of more than two houses.

landuse=residential

Roads Trace all roads that connect buildings and Residential Areas to the road system.

Primary roads connect medium and large cities, at least two lanes in each direction, usually separated by a physical feature.

highway=primary

Secondary roads connect medium and large cities, at least two lanes in each direction without physical separation.

highway=secondary

Tertiary roads connect villages and major streets in towns of some importance

highway=tertiary

Minor roads connecting villages and hamlets are tagged as "unclassified"

highway=unclassified

Residential roads are streets within a town or village

highway=residential

In addition to using the highway tag, one can indicate the physical surface of the road with the surface tag. Generically, a hard surface (asphalt, cobblestone, concrete...) is indicated with surface=paved and a soft one (ground, sand...) with surface=unpaved.

surface = *
